THE TRUE FACE OF TSR: The dangers of visiting thesimsresource.com

UPDATED:LARGE PRIVATE INFORMATION LEAK FROM TSR

Atwa  ( now known as CarpeDiem ) has deliberately leaked a document containing the full names and Emails of 614 innocent people.  She is handing out this file to everyone she talks to asking them to forward it on to everyone they know. She says the information belongs to known ‘pirates’ and that ‘we’ need this information in order to “protect ourselves” and “defend ourselves” ( Yes, I know WTF? comes to mind, but remember we are now in Atwaland. ) She is adamant this document was supplied to her by TSR owner,  Thomas. The origins of it vary from “I don’t know” to “I can’t say” depending on who she is talking to.

For obvious reasons I can not publish the document in full, so I will try to describe what I am seeing. The document itself is a list of 614 real names, numbered from 2  to 615, interestingly number 1 is missing from the file. Next to each name is a Email address and next to some of them are comments which seem to be addressed to EA and carry anti-TSR vibes, with one example being: “Get your heads out of TSRs arses and start focusing on your customers!” Most of the names are in full ( for example, John Doe  or John A. Doe ) and some with forenames initialled (  J. Doe  ) with a few having first names only. ( John or John. D )  All names are supplied with Emails. At a guess I would say around 50% also carry a comment next to their Email.

The reasoning and timing of this leak is very hard to figure. Atwa has enjoyed being in the SA position for some time now, with a promotion to FA due in December. She has a good relationship with Tom, to the extent that he is prepared to risk his business, his staff and his sweatshop employees in order to keep her close. (  I was going to add reputation to that list but one can not gamble with a non-existent chip. )  I can not understand why she would implicate Tom knowing full well that doing so would end her promotion dream.  Even more extraordinary is that Tom has been made fully aware of her sharing the file and of her implicating him, and yet he seems unconcerned and she still has her account at TSR. It is almost like Tom is behind this but surly that would be committing business suicide, although the mere recurring presence of Atwa at TSR does show he is inclined to randomly self destruct for no apparent reason.

There is no evidence that anyone listed on the document are actual software ‘pirates’ or that any of them have access to a large boat.

John Doe is used for an example only and this name does not appear on the genuine list.

 UPDATE NOV 29

Atwa/CarpeDiem has now been canned as SA.

  1. Wait-did some of these come from EA? Is EA supplying these emails to Thomas?

  2. What would be interesting to know is if any of the peeps who were hacked, myself included, were on this list of pirates.

  5. Couldn’t happen to a better person! I’d call her even worse than some have, but I have manners. She doesn’t even have those.

  6. If they appeared with commentary, it seems possible that they were mined off of one of those online petition sites?

  7. Hacked petition is more like it Quinctia. It is looking more & more like this info has come from blue soups petition to EA that was hacked as some of the names & e-mails have comments directed to EA themselves. Now we know who hacked blues petition.

Coconut have i told you how much i love you lately? Thank you for all that you do *hugs*

  8. She and whoever provided her with the information violated several laws.

In Britain, she violated the Data Protection Act of 1998 – http://www.opsi.gov.uk/Acts/Acts1998/ukpga_19980029_en_1
In addition they may have violated COPPA if any of those listed names are people under the age of 13 – http://www.coppa.org/coppa.htm
If the information came from a financial source, aka Credit Card or Paypal information and any part of the site is operated in the U.S. they violated the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act
They also could have violated Section 5 of the FTC Act – http://www.ftc.gov/privacy/privacyinitiatives/promises.html – again U.S. based but any part of the site is operated in the U.S. it is applicable. I don’t know what TSR’s privacy policy states or if they even have one since I refuse to go to the site because of “security breaches” like this.

But there may be legal recourse for what she did.
